Create an Encryption Key
In Cryptio, navigate to the Key Management section and click "Generate New Key". Choose your encryption algorithm:
- AES-256-GCM - Best for general use (recommended)
- ChaCha20-Poly1305 - Faster on older computers
- RSA-4096 - For asymmetric encryption and secure file sharing
Set a strong password to protect your key. Your password should be:
- At least 12 characters long
- Include uppercase and lowercase letters
- Include numbers and special characters
- Not a common word or phrase
Select Files to Encrypt
There are two ways to select files for encryption:
- Drag and Drop: Simply drag files or folders from your file manager into the Cryptio window
- Browse: Click "Select Files" or "Select Folder" and browse to choose files
You can encrypt individual files, multiple files at once, or entire folders with all their contents.
Configure Encryption Settings
Before encrypting, configure these settings:
- Encryption Key: Select the key you created in Step 2
- Output Location: Choose where to save encrypted files (default: same folder with .enc extension)
- Compression: Enable to reduce file size (recommended for large files)
- Secure Deletion: Enable to permanently delete original files after encryption (uses DoD 5220.22-M wiping)
Important: If you enable secure deletion, your original files will be permanently erased. Make sure you have backups if needed.
Encrypt and Verify
Click the "Encrypt" button to start the encryption process. Cryptio will:
- Encrypt each file using your selected algorithm and key
- Optionally compress files to reduce size
- Save encrypted files to your chosen location
- Optionally securely delete original files (if enabled)
- Display a success message when complete
Your encrypted files will have a .enc extension (or .cryptio depending on your settings). To decrypt them later, use Cryptio with the same encryption key and password.
Success! Your files are now protected with military-grade AES-256 encryption. Only someone with your encryption key and password can decrypt them.
Tips for Secure File Encryption
Backup Your Encryption Keys
Store your encryption keys and passwords in a secure location like a password manager or encrypted USB drive. If you lose your key, you cannot recover your encrypted files.
Use Strong, Unique Passwords
Never reuse passwords from other accounts. Use Cryptio's built-in password generator to create cryptographically secure passwords.
Verify Encryption Success
After encrypting, try opening your encrypted file in a text editor - you should see only garbled characters, confirming successful encryption.
Keep Cryptio Updated
Enable automatic updates to ensure you have the latest security patches and features. Cryptio regularly updates its encryption algorithms and security measures.
How to Decrypt Files
To decrypt files encrypted with Cryptio:
- Open Cryptio and select "Decrypt Files"
- Drag and drop your encrypted files or browse to select them
- Select the same encryption key used to encrypt the files
- Enter your key password
- Click "Decrypt" - your original files will be restored
